biography text

Noyes’s ancestors had farmed Ramridge manor in Weyhill, three miles from Andover, as tenants of Ewelme hospital since its foundation in the middle of the fifteenth century, and by Elizabethan times they had acquired a share in the revenues of Weyhill fair as owners of Blismore Hall.8 N and Q (ser. 4), i. 390; HMC 8th Rep. i. 630, 631; VCH Hants, iv. 395, 396. Noyes helped to procure Andover’s new charter in 1599, receiving £22 for his pains, and was named to the corporation.9 Hants RO, 37M85/4/AC/2, unfol. He was returned for the borough in 1614, but left no trace on the records of the Addled Parliament. His son Peter, an attorney, became town clerk of Andover five years later.10 Add. 38446, f. 17. In 1630 Noyes compounded for knighthood for £12 10s.11 Add. 21922, f. 177. Soon afterwards he seems to have left the county to take up residence on his wife’s property in Berkshire. He may have left Andover on less than amicable terms, for in 1631 he was accused of having improperly detained the corporation records, which he denied.12 C2/Chas.I/A19/39. He died intestate at Reading sometime before 23 June 1647, when letters of administration were granted to his only surviving son, William.13 Suss. Arch. Colls. ix. 341; PROB 6/22, f. 82. The family became established among the Berkshire gentry, but none of Noyes’s descendants entered Parliament.14 Vis. Berks. (Harl. Soc. lvi), 252.
