At the assizes held at Lewes in June 1422 Woghere and his wife brought a plea of novel disseisin against John Mason and William Haselden, but no details about the suit survive. During the 1420s, across the border in Surrey, he was a tenant of land at Lingfield (for which he paid an annual rent of 4s.8d. to Agnes, widow of John Hathersham II), and his subsequent designation as ‘husbandman’ suggests that he made a living principally from farming. Early in 1434 Woghere took out a royal pardon of outlawry in Middlesex following his failure to answer a plea for a debt of £3 brought by John Nelond esquire, who had an estate in East Grinstead and Lingfield by virtue of his marriage to Thomas St. Cler’s widow.1JUST 1/1532 m. 10; CCR, 1429-35, p. 62; CPR, 1429-36, p. 313.
