Richard Cuthbert belonged to a northern family which claimed arms. He lived at Long Riston in Holderness, where in 1553 he was assessed for the subsidy on goods worth £20. By trade he was a merchant who probably shipped his goods through the port of Hedon. His election there on three consecutive occasions under Mary was perhaps favoured by a neighbour, Sir John Constable, whose own Membership for the borough alternated with Cuthbert’s. Nothing else has been discovered about Cuthbert, although several namesakes can be traced later in the century. The Richard Cuthbert living at Patrington in Holderness early in the 17th century was probably a descendant.4C193/31/1; 219/24/60; E179/261/1; CPR, 1569-72, p. 109; Feet of Fines, ii (Yorks. Arch.
