A younger son in one of the leading Radnorshire families, Stephen Price had settled at Pilleth by 1543, being assessed at £8 in goods there for the subsidy of that year. In 1555 he was perhaps the second member of his family to be elected knight of the shire, a John Price having been by-elected to the Parliament of 1542. While a Member, Price was pricked sheriff, but he is not known to have obtained leave of absence to execute the office. He had been returned as ‘armiger’ but in 1559 he sued out a pardon as of Pilleth, ‘gentleman’ alias of Nant-y-Groes, ‘yeoman’. He died midway through his term as escheator of Radnorshire, a new appointment being made on 19 June 1562. The Stephen ap Rhys of Old Radnor who made his will on 6 July 1562 must therefore have been a namesake.3Trans. Rad. Hist.
