SACKVILLE, John II (by 1523-47/52).

John Sackville was admitted to the Inner Temple at the suit of his brother Richard and was pardoned all offices and vacations on payment of 40s. It is possible that he was intended to occupy the family estates in Essex, as his father had once done: in 1544 he joined his father in buying from Richard Duke a property in the county called ‘Le Almarye’ in West Bergholt. Three years later, after the accession of Edward VI, Sackville made a brief incursion into public life when, together with his brother Richard and his brother-in-law Nicholas Pelham, he entered the first Parliament of the reign. His election at East Grinstead was undoubtedly the work of his father, who was sheriff at the time and whose home at Withyham was some six miles from the borough, which he himself had represented in the last Parliament but one. The career thus begun was to be cut short by death, although how quickly is not known. A terminal date is provided by the list of Members as revised for the final session of the Parliament, which began in January 1552: on this list he is replaced by George Darrell.
