John Tunks was one of the servants of (Sir) Edmund Brydges, later 2nd Baron Chandos, who figure in a Star Chamber case brought by Anthony Daston during the reign of Edward VI. They were accused with their master and some of his kinsmen of poaching, trespass, murder and contempt of the council in the marches of Wales, and Tunks was reported to have said that he ‘would threaten all the lords and men of worship in the county so that the case would not be fairly heard’. The outcome is unknown but it is clear that Tunks must have owed his return for Cricklade to the influence of the Brydges family.1St.Ch.3/5/21.
