The Banks of Whixley were an ancient family, descended from the Banks of Newton-in-Craven. Banks was evidently on good terms with the local families of Byrnaunde and Slingsby, and his return for Knaresborough may also have owed something to his duchy of Lancaster offices. It is not known when he died. In 1598, as the guardian of Ann Hunter, he sued John Hunter and others in the duchy court for illegal entry into her property in the lordship of Furness.1Pullein, Pulleyns of York. 129, 196; Wards 10/7; Somerville, Duchy, i. 513, 603, 618; Knaresborough Wills (Surtees Soc. civ), 181; DL1/180/20B.
