As in the case of so many younger sons of the nobility, Carey’s career is obscure. Perhaps he held a military command at Berwick under his father, who was governor there and warden of the east and west marches. In 1582 a William Carey is mentioned as a pensioner in the treasurer of Berwick’s accounts. His name does not appear in the parliamentary journals of the House, but, as first knight for Northumberland, he may have attended the subsidy committee on 11 Feb. 1589.2Lansd. 34, f. 156; D’Ewes, 431.
He died intestate in 1593, letters of administration being granted to his widow 18 May.3Rylands Eng ms 311.
