GREAVES, William (d. by 1621), of Nottingham.

Greaves’s parentage is unknown, but he is said to have come from London. Having married in Nottingham, he settled there in a house in Long Row, probably as a draper. He may also have owned an inn. He was once threatened with a 2s. fine if he failed to obtain the scarlet gown which custom required him to wear. After the King’s visit to Nottingham, Greaves was, in August 1616, paid 8s.4d. as compensation for damage done in his grounds by the courtiers’ horses. The King again visited Nottingham in 1621 and Greaves contributed £16 towards the town’s expenses. He had died by 28 Feb. 1621.1Nottingham Resc. iv. 337, 421-31 et passim; J. T.
