biography text

Hilliard was a lawyer who became recorder of York and sat once for the city in Parliament, serving on a committee about Mary Queen of Scots (4 Nov. 1586). By 1590 he was rich enough to be put down for £30 for the loan to the Queen, and between 1575 and 1602 he acquired a good deal of landed property in Beverley and elsewhere. Hilliard had Catholic connexions: Lady Catherine Constable of Burton Constable bequeathed him a ‘cup of mother of pearl’ in 1590, and in 1598 a relation who was a recusant made Hilliard the supervisor of his will. He died 20 Aug. 1608, and was buried at St. Michael Belfry, York.1Glover, Vis.
