biography text

Holcroft was returned for Midhurst at the last minute in place of George Gascoigne, no doubt nominated by Viscount Montagu, the lord of the manor. He is not mentioned in the known surviving records of the House. In June 1590 the Privy Council was asked to intervene over his ‘hard and unconscionable dealing’ as bailiff of Westminster in withholding £20 Burghley had given him to pay for the use of a house there. He died in 1591 and was buried on 27 May at Battersea, where he was churchwarden. His widow married Oliver St. John III.1Rylands Eng. ms 311; J. G.
