Much Wenlock [1593]
biography text

This Member has not been identified. Two knights bear a similar name, but Sir John Poley, who was knighted in the Netherlands in 1588, and killed there in 1594, was almost certainly out of England at the time of the Parliament, while Sir John Poley of Wrongey was not knighted until 1599. Two local families, the Powells of All Stretton, and the Powells of Edenhope, have been considered but neither has recorded in its pedigree a knight of this name.1Trans. Salop Arch. Soc. (ser. 3), ii. 318-19; APC, xxi. 45; xxii. 432; xxiii. 243; xxiv. 101; Vis. Salop (Harl. Soc. xxix), 405-7.
