SACKVILLE, John (d.1619), of Brede; later of Sedlescombe, Suss.

It is assumed that John Sackville, nephew of Sir Richard Sackville and first cousin of Thomas Sackville, later Lord Buckhurst, was the 1563 Member for East Grinstead rather than John Sackville of Chiddingly, Sir Richard’s second cousin. He would have been returned through the influence of his powerful relatives. As late as 1607, he was still resident at Brede, but in his will, dated January 1619, he described himself as of Sedlescombe, and he placed Sedlescombe first on his list of six Sussex parishes whose poor he wanted to assist. Among other beneficiaries were his wife, brother and married sister, his sons, Thomas and John, and a married daughter. Most remarkable were the legacies to his two unmarried daughters, Anne and Joan, each of whom was given £1,000. In a final request appended to the will, Sackville asked his son and executor, Thomas, to give Anne a further £200 as well. He died 21 Dec. 1619.1W. Berry, Co. Genealogies, Suss.
