biography text

Returned at a last minute vacancy for Southampton, Thorley’s name was written in over an erasure in the return, the original date of 24 Sept. being left unchanged. He may have been a lawyer, for his will, dated 1 Apr. 1611, was proved 14 days later by his relative and executor, Miles Dodson of Gray’s Inn. Thorley’s brothers, their children, and a number of other relatives received small bequests. His laundress, and the poor of the parish of St. Andrew Holborn in London and Holme in Yorkshire, where he was born, were among the beneficiaries.1C219/30; PCC 29 Wood.
