biography text

West’s father had presumably enough influence in Hampshire to prevail upon the dean and chapter of Winchester, owners of the parliamentary patronage at Whitchurch, to have him returned there, but it is also possible that the Earl of Essex may have intervened. Both West’s father and his younger brother Thomas were close to Essex, and it is inconceivable that Robert would not have come under his influence. However it came about, West was an MP while still a student at the Inner Temple, where he had been specially admitted at the request of his father-in-law, and granted permission to build a chamber on White Friars Wall. It was from here that his body was carried on 8 June 1594 to be buried in St. Dunstan-in-the-West.2I.T. Recs. i. 381; Guildhall Lib. 10342, f. 182. In the index to vol. i of I.T. Recs. two references to a Mr. West in 1595 are assigned to this man instead of to William West.
