Gore, a cousin of Sir John Gore, came of a well-established London merchant family. It was presumably through his father-in-law’s influence that he was returned for Queenborough as an opponent of the Court in 1681; but the ‘Mr Gore’ or ‘George’ whose name appears with some prominence in the records of the Oxford Parliament must have been William Leverson Gower. He was defeated at Queenborough in 1690, but his name continued to appear on the Kent assessment commissions till 1707, when he was replaced by his son Robert.
