Following family tradition, Wrey became an army officer. In 1682 he was posted to Berwick, where he detected a plot to suborn the garrison, and in the following year took over his brother’s company. He was active in local politics in Northumberland under the direction of the Duke of Newcastle (Henry Cavendish), and advised on the quo warranto proceedings against the Berwick corporation. Returned for his brother’s borough of Liskeard with the electorate reduced by the new charter in 1685, he left no trace on the records of James II’s Parliament. It was suggested that he might stand again in 1688, but as far as is known he never did so.
