Descended from a London alderman who purchased Albyns c.1635, Abdy was returned unopposed for his county as a Tory, voting against the Administration in every recorded division. He was to have taken part in a Jacobite rising in Essex, planned to coincide with a French landing in February 1744,1See BARRY, James. was one of the six Tory Members to whom the military details of the scheme were communicated,2AEM & D Angl. 82, ff. 149-57. and was referred to by the Pretender as one of his principal advisers in England.325 Dec. 1743, Stuart mss 254/104. He died 27 Aug. 1748.
