Bateman, who bought the manor of Alford soon after 1719,2R. C. Dudding, Hist. Alford, 42-44. was returned for Carlisle in 1722 after a contest, at which he did not make an appearance. Petitions against his return were presented on the ground that his agents had persuaded many of the electors to vote for his brother, William, but that at the last moment the name in the poll book had been changed from William to James. In the end the petitions were allowed to lapse. He did not stand again, dying 9 Apr. 1758.
