After serving in Spain in the war of the Spanish succession, Bowles succeeded his cousin and namesake as colonel of the 12th Lancers, a newly-formed regiment stationed in Ireland, where he spent most of the rest of his life. At a by-election in 1735 he was brought in for Bewdley by his brother, voting with the Administration, but he did not stand again.
