In November 1740 Broughton was nominated without his consent for Newcastle-under-Lyme and was defeated.1Staffs Parl. Hist. (Wm. Salt Arch. Soc.) ii(2), pp. 238-9. Returned next year for Wenlock on his father-in-law’s interest, his only recorded vote was for the Government on the chairman of the elections committee in December 1741. In the Cockpit list of 1742 he was allocated to H. A. Herbert. He died 11 Aug. 1744.
