The Burgoynes had acquired Sutton and Wroxall in the time of Henry VIII and the 1st and 2nd Baronets represented Warwickshire and Bedfordshire respectively in the Long Parliament. Sir Roger Burgoyne, who succeeded his elder brother as an infant, did not, however, inherit the Wroxall estate, which was sold by his mother in 1713, in accordance with his father’s will, to Sir Christopher Wren,1J. W. Ryland, Recs. of Wroxall Abbey, 198-9. M.P., whose son Christopher she afterwards married. Returned as a Whig, he supported the Administration till 1739, when he voted against the Spanish Convention, thenceforth voting with the Opposition except on the Bossiney election petition in December 1741.2Coxe, Walpole, iii. 518, 582-3; see also ante, pp. 96-97. Changing sides, probably with his brother-in-law, Lord Halifax, who obtained a government post in December 1744, he was classed as a ‘New Ally’ in 1746. He did not stand again but in 1752 was given a place which he held till his death, 31 Dec. 1780.
