biography text
Cox came of a Gloucestershire family, who by the end of the seventeenth century had branches also in Herefordshire and Wiltshire. Buying Basset Down from the Yorke family in 1709,1Yorke, Hardwicke, i. 9-10. he subsequently acquired by marriage the manor of Ston Easton in Somerset. Classed as a Tory at George I’s accession, he was elected for Milborne Port without a contest, voting against the septennial bill. He died 10 May 1717.
