Of Flemish extraction, Du Cane belonged to an eminent family of Huguenot merchants in the city of London. He acquired by marriage substantial property near Colchester, where he was successful as a Whig in 1715. He voted for the septennial bill in 1716 and for the repeal of the Occasional Conformity and Schism Acts, but against the peerage bill in 1719, did not stand again, and died 3 Oct. 1744.
