John Fermor, a professional soldier of an old Sussex family, was invalided home from Portugal in 1705, served in the Duke of Argyll’s regiment (the Buffs) at Malplaquet 1709 and was appointed by the Duke to his staff in Spain 1711.2Dalton, Eng. Army Lists, vi. 325-6. At the election of 1722 he was brought in at Malmesbury by Giles Earle, who had also served in Spain on Argyll’s staff. Though defeated at the poll, he was seated by the House of Commons 16 days before his death from smallpox, 29 Dec. 1722.
