Thomas Frederick, whose great-grandfather, Sir Thomas Frederick, M.P., had been lord mayor of London in 1662, came of a family of wealthy merchants.1E. H. Fellowes, Hist. Frederick Fam., 28. He was returned for Shoreham ‘(as his friends gave out) with the assistance of the Government’,2Undated mem. by the Duke of Richmond, Richmond mss. with whom he consistently voted. He was on the council of the Georgia Society but ceased to attend meetings after the society incurred Walpole’s displeasure, ‘he being very great with my Lady Walpole, who is a great enemy to our colony’. On 22 Feb. 1737 he spoke in favour of the motion to settle £100,000 upon the Prince of Wales, and on 8 Mar. 1738 he seconded the motion for a grant for the further settlement of Georgia.3HMC Egmont Diary, ii. 286, 469. He died 21 Aug. 1740, leaving most of his property to his brother John.
