John Gumley, a wealthy plate-glass manufacturer and army contractor,2C. Dalton, Geo. I’s Army, i. 253; PCC 10 Abbott. owed his appointment in 1716 to his son-in-law William Pulteney, then secretary-at-war, whose avaricious wife was said to have taken the salary of her father’s post, leaving him only the perquisites.3Walpole to Mann, 9 Aug. 1742. In 1722 he contested Bramber unsuccessfully, but was returned for the adjacent borough of Steyning. He did not stand in 1727, dying 19 Dec. 1728.
