HALDANE, Mungo (1682-1755), of Gleneagles, Perth.

Haldane came of an ancient family, settled at Gleneagles since the fifteenth century. His father, a zealous Whig, had represented Perthshire and Dunbartonshire in the Parliament of Scotland, sitting for Perthshire in the first British Parliament. Through his mother he was connected with the Duke of Montrose, one of the leaders of the Squadrone. Returned as a Whig for Stirlingshire at George I’s accession, he voted with the Government in every recorded division of his first Parliament, in which he was put down by Craggs in 1719 to ‘Roxburghe and Montrose’. In 1722 he successfully contested Dunbartonshire but was unseated on petition by an Argyll candidate in 1725. He was returned next year at a by-election for Perthshire, where he stood unsuccessfully against the Atholl interest in 1727.
