In 1648 Sir Charles Harbord, surveyor general to Charles I, purchased Stanninghall from the Waldegrave family. His only surviving son and heir, John Harbord, who acquired Gunton, dying without heirs in 1710, left the bulk of his estates to his nephew Harbord Cropley, who thereupon assumed the name of Harbord. Returned for the county after a contest at a by-election in 1728 as a government supporter, Harbord voted for the excise bill, but did not stand again. He died 28 Jan. 1742, leaving his Norfolk properties to his nephew William Morden who also took the name of Harbord.1P. Millican, Hist.
