Returned unopposed as an opposition Whig in 1741, standing jointly with Sir Miles Stapylton, a Tory,1HMC Hastings, iii. 30; HMC Carlisle, 195-7. Morpeth died 9 Aug. 1741 before Parliament met, of a ‘venereal distemper which he caught in Italy and kept secret so long that it proved at last incurable’.2HMC 12th Rep IX, 204.
