Lord Walden was brought up by his father and had little contact with his mother after she became mistress to the Prince of Wales, later George II.1Lewis Melville, Lady Suffolk and her Circle, 263. Returned for Bere Alston by his uncle, Sir John Hobart, he voted consistently against the Government until he succeeded to the peerage in 1733. By his subsequent marriage to an heiress he was able to discharge the existing mortgages at Audley End.2W. Addison, Audley End, 63. On his death intestate, 22 Apr. 1745, his title, but not his estates, passed to Henry Bowes Howard, 4th Earl of Berkshire, father of Thomas Howard and William Howard, Lord Andover.
