Lord John Johnstone, whose mother was remarried to a brother of Sir James Johnstone, came back from France in November 1739 with instructions from his brother, the 3rd Marquess of Annandale, to enlist the family interest in support of the Government.2Marchioness of Annandale to Geo. II, 21 Nov. 1739, Add. 32692, f. 464. Nevertheless, on being returned for Dumfries Burghs in 1741, though under age, he voted against Walpole’s candidate for the chairman of the elections committee but was included in the Cockpit list of ministerial supporters drawn up by Pelham in October 1742. He died of consumption 13 Nov. 1742.
