William Kirkpatrick, a lawyer, whose grandfather had represented the county under William III, contested a by-election for Dumfries Burghs in May 1735 on the interest of Charles Areskine, his future father-in-law, who had been elected in 1734 but chose to sit for Dumfriesshire. Awarded the seat on petition after a double return, he vacated it in June 1738 on appointment as clerk of session. He died 22 May 1778.
