Lockhart’s family had been at Lee since the thirteenth century. Six members of it, including two of his brothers, had represented Lanarkshire in the Parliament of Scotland. His father, Sir William Lockhart, was a distinguished soldier and diplomat, lord justice clerk, and ambassador to France under Cromwell, to whom he was related by marriage. Returned for Lanarkshire as a Whig in 1715, he voted with the Administration on the septennial bill in 1716, dying 19 Oct. 1718.
