Ord’s grandfather, a wealthy Newcastle attorney, who had purchased large estates in his county, was connected with Sidney Wortley as a coal owner and a member of the cartel which dominated the coal trade in the eighteenth century.1E. Hughes, N. Country Life in 18th Cent., 168-95, 209-14. Returned for Mitchell as an opposition Whig in 1741 on the nomination of Lord Sandwich, the head of Wortley’s family, he voted against the Administration in all recorded divisions. He died 1 July 1745.
