The grandson of Sir Gilbert Pickering, 1st Bt., M.P., chamberlain to Cromwell, Pickering’s father had been active on behalf of the Whigs in Leicestershire elections.1Verney Letters of 18th Cent. i. 245, 333. Through his mother he inherited ‘a very great fortune’.2Add. 24121, f. 166. Returned for Mitchell in 1745, he voted against the Hanoverians in April 1746, when he was classed as ‘doubtful’. Six months later Lord Sandwich referred to him as a ‘professed opposer’ of the Administration.3Add. 32805, f. 281. He did not stand in 1747 and died 10 July 1749.
