John Rogers stood for the mayoralty of Plymouth in 1728, when passion rose so high that he and the rival candidate, George Treby, drew their swords upon one another. On a tie, he was declared elected by a mandamus from the King’s bench.1H. F. Whitfield, Plymouth, 167; R. W. S. Baron, Mayors and Mayoralties of Plymouth, 42. Returned against a government candidate, Charles Vanburgh, in 1739, he was unseated in favour of his opponent and did not stand again. He died 20 Dec. 1773.
