Returned by the Duke of Newcastle at a by-election in 1746, Dalkeith wrote to Henry Pelham on the eve of the dissolution of Parliament in 1747:
If the Duke of Newcastle is so good as to bring me again into Parliament, there will not be one person in the House of Commons a more steady friend to him and of his family, for the civilities I have already received from the Pelhams are sufficient to bind me to them forever. As to yourself I shall be silent, for if I was to say half what I think it would look like flattery, and a flatterer I abhor.19 June 1747, Newcastle (Clumber) mss.
