biography text
On the death of Sir William Lowther, Fleming was persuaded to offer himself for the vacant seat and hold it in trust for Sir James Lowther till he should come of age. He was recommended by Lowther in a circular letter as ‘a person most heartily attached to his Majesty’, and was returned unopposed. Even so the election cost Lowther over £550, £200 being paid to the needy Sir George Dalston for organizing it.1B. Bonsall, Sir James Lowther, 36-37.
Fleming died 31 Mar. 1757.
