Vane sat for Durham County on the family interest, and for Carlisle on the interest of Sir James Lowther, brother-in-law of Henry, Viscount Barnard. In Bute’s list of December 1761 he was marked ‘Lowther’ and ‘Lord Darlington’. He appears in Henry Fox’s list of Members in favour of the peace preliminaries, December 1762, but not in any division list for the Parliament of 1761. Rockingham in July 1765 classed him as ‘pro’ and in November 1766 as ‘Bute’; while Newcastle classed him in March 1767 as ‘Administration’—probably the best summary of his politics. He is not known to have spoken in the House. He did not stand in 1768 and in May 1769 declined an offer by Sir Lawrence Dundas to come into Parliament for Richmond.1Add. 38206, f. 121.

He died 23 Oct. 1769.
