Chewton was returned at Newcastle-under-Lyme on the interest of his uncle, Lord Gower. For most of his parliamentary career he was in America as aide-de-camp to Cornwallis: February 1776 to January 1778, April to November 1778, and July 1779 to January 1782. His only reported speech in the Commons, 27 Feb. 1775, was to complain of an Opposition newspaper;1Almon, i. 235. and his only recorded vote, 3 Mar. 1779, for Administration on the motion about Keppel.
He died 17 Oct. 1789.
