Carew, brother-in-law of Sir Simon John Newport, sat in the Irish parliament for Waterford city, like his father. He lost this seat on the ballot after opposing the Union and at first intended to recapture it, but gave way to Newport. In 1806 he was returned for Wexford with government approval and gave the Grenville ministry a silent support, in and out of office: he voted with their opposition minorities on 25 Mar. and 9 Apr. 1807. He did not seek re-election in 1807, his health not being up to a contest, but his son and namesake was returned in 1812. Carew died 29 Mar. 1829.
