MONTGOMERY, William (1765-1800), of Stanhope, Peebles.

Montgomery, the eldest son of Lord Chief Baron Montgomery, was chosen unanimously for Peeblesshire, which his father, a friend of Henry Dundas, had previously represented. His military career doubtless hindered his attendance, for which there is little evidence, though he was expected to support government. By one account he was absent on the division for relieving Scotsmen from the Test Act, 10 May 1791, and was (by the Whigs) reckoned favourable to it; but Sir Gilbert Elliot reported him hostile in intention and vote. No vote against administration by him is known and only one speech, the introduction of a bill to augment the capital of the Bank of Scotland, 29 Jan. 1794, supported by Dundas.
