CHARLTON, William (c.1652-85), of Ludford, Herefs.

Charlton became a lawyer like his father. His appointment by the Ludlow corporation as town clerk in April 1679 was initially approved by the crown, but quashed on a technicality at the instance of Lord Newport. However, Charlton’s father used his extensive interest at Court to procure a royal veto on the rival candidate, and he regained the post in February 1681. A Tory, he was reappointed under the 1685 charter and elected to James II’s Parliament.
