NOEL, Hon. Henry (1642-77), of North Luffenham, Rutland.

Noel inherited North Luffenham, six miles from Stamford, from his uncle and namesake, a prominent Royalist who died in prison during the Civil War. At the Restoration he was one of the proposed knights of the Royal Oak, when his income was estimated at £1,000 p.a. He was returned in 1677 as court candidate for Stamford at a contested by-election, on which his father, the recorder, spent over £1,000, while Noel himself gave ‘a handsome fire-engine for the use of the town’. He was marked ‘thrice vile’ on Shaftesbury’s list, and died six months later on 20 Sept., probably without sitting on any committees in the Cavalier Parliament.
