The Canons were an old Pembrokeshire family, originally of Laugharne, who acquired Cilgetty and their Haverfordwest property by marriage. Canon himself may have been admitted to the Middle Temple with the help of Gelly Meyrick. There is no record of his call to the bar, but several Pembrokeshire men, including Nicholas Adams, his own younger brother William and Richard Philipps, the heir to Picton, were bound with him between 1596 and 1611, when he surrendered his chambers near Essex House. He was still alive in 1623, when he was granted the right to work certain lead mines in Pembrokeshire, ‘long held by his ancestors’.
