WOOD, Robert (b. c.1762), of Putney, Surr.

In February 1784 Wood’s mother made over to him the mansion at Putney, bought from the Gibbons, where Edward Gibbon had been born.PCC 1015 Marriott; Letters of Edw. Gibbon, ed. Norton, i. 253; Farington Diary, i. 6. In the same year he contested Lyme Regis on behalf of the freeholders against the Fane interest. He was later returned for Minehead on the Luttrell interest. In 1788 Lord Mornington described him as a friend of Pitt who was prepared to pay, £2,500 for a seat at Grimsby at the next general election.W. M. Torrens, Mq. Wellesley, 71. Wood voted with Pitt on the Regency 1788-9.

He died some time after 1803.
