WILLIAMS, John (b. 1736).

In May 1772, when Thomas Bradshaw stood for re-election at Saltash, he was defeated by John Williams, described by WalpoleLast Jnls. i. 89, 360. as ‘a West Indian, who bribed the corporation’. During his month in the House of Commons Williams made two reported speeches, one asserting his readiness to submit his election to investigation, and the second on the Africa trade.Cavendish’s ‘Debates’, Egerton 241, pp. 280-1; 242, p. 4. When Bradshaw’s petition was heard, he was unseated.

He may have been the John Williams who was defeated at Fowey in 1768, and at Poole in 1774.
