Mason was returned with the help of his father, who was probably a Whig, for a borough in the affairs of which his family had long taken a leading part. Lord Carmarthen (Sir Thomas Osborne†) classed him as a Whig in a list of March 1690, but he was dead v.p., by 11 Apr. 1690, when a writ for a new election was ordered, and was eventually succeeded in the seat by his younger brother, Charles.
