ALINGTON, Giles (1680-91)

Alington was four years old when he succeeded to the title. Rather surprisingly, Alington was said to have been one of the Lords questioned by James II in 1688 after a copy of the Prince of Orange’s declaration was found. Clarke, Life of James II, ii. 210. He died of smallpox at Eton on 18 Sept. 1691, his mother having carried him to the school ‘to see him placed there, and left him dead before she returned’. Verney ms mic. M636/45, M. Adams to Sir R. Verney, 22 Sept. 1691. On his death the English title became extinct. He was buried with his father and grandfather at Horseheath on 22 Sept. 1691.
